Expect the Unexpected - Longhill Lodge & Reserve
A five-star stamp of approval – that was the thought I had as we left LongHill Lodge & Reserve on a warm, quiet Sunday in early May.
Why five stars, you ask? Well, let me explain.
We had the privilege of overnighting in one of the Mavericks Luxury Tents: spacious, cosy, and the perfect balance between camping and glamping, minus the bugs. The private hot tub just outside the tent is a bonus and was thoroughly enjoyed during the late evening hours after dinner. But what truly made this stay special went far beyond the accommodation.

A Game Drive to Remember
Our first activity was a game drive through the LongHill Reserve, guided by Nicole. From the moment we set off, it was clear that her passion for wildlife and conservation runs deep. She spoke about the reserve and its animals as though introducing us to old friends, making the entire experience feel warm, personal, and incredibly authentic.
What stood out most was the respect she showed for the land and its wildlife. It’s not often you find a guide who balances genuine care with unforgettable sightings and adrenaline-fuelled moments. From a heart-thumping elephant encounter to quietly sitting amongst buffalo, every moment felt immersive and natural.
And then came the cheetahs…
The two LongHill boys gave us a front-row seat to witness their incredible strength, agility, and teamwork during a hunt right in front of us. It was one of those rare wildlife moments that leaves you speechless. Even now, thinking back on it still gives me goosebumps.
Lunch with the Bush Boma Team
After the drive, it was time to meet the Bush Boma team for lunch, and what a team they are. Anyone in South Africa knows how much we love our food, and the team certainly did not disappoint. From lunch through to dinner and dessert, we were constantly spoiled with delicious meals, warm hospitality, and generous portions.
"Maagies vol en oogies toe"
There’s a South African saying: “Maagies vol en oogies toe” – “tummies full, eyes closed” – and it couldn’t have been more fitting. Especially once your head hits those heavenly soft pillows and you wrap yourself in the warm blankets of the Mavericks Luxury Tents. It was so cosy that getting up to try the shower almost felt like too much effort… but it was definitely worth it.
Sunrise, Coffee & Breakfast
Now, on a personal note, I’ll admit I’m a breakfast girlie, so my expectations were already high after the previous day’s feast. Somehow, they still managed to exceed them. From fluffy golden crumpets and fresh seasonal fruit to cereals, preserves, Nutella, and a warm buffet spread, breakfast at LongHill was an experience all on its own.
Watching the sunrise over the Bush Boma was one of the highlights of the trip. A true South African sunrise, with wildlife moving quietly in the distance, fantastic food on the table, and coffee in hand, it’s the kind of moment photographers dream about. We were even lucky enough to watch part of the buffalo herd arrive for their morning drink while we enjoyed breakfast.
Before We Say Goodbye
Before heading home, we squeezed in one final game drive and a site inspection, making it incredibly difficult to say goodbye.
So yes, this is exactly why LongHill earns a five-star rating from us.
The hospitality goes far beyond expectations. Friendships are formed, partnerships are built, and every guest is treated with genuine care. From the wildlife experiences to the food, accommodation, and people behind it all, LongHill creates an atmosphere where you truly feel welcomed and valued every step of the way.
A Heartfelt Thank You
A heartfelt thank you to the entire LongHill team for an unforgettable stay. And a special shout-out to Danielle for all the communication and preparation leading up to our educational visit. Your friendliness, professionalism, and fun personality are part of what makes LongHill so special.
An unexpected delight, and an experience we won’t soon forget.
