14 St Mary's Terrace, Port Elizabeth Central, Gqeberha, 6001

Description

Route 67 in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) is one of the most interesting and innovative inner-city initiatives in South Africa. The "Route 67" art journey celebrates the 67 years of Nelson Mandela’s political life through a visual collection of works produced by local artists. This 67-minute walk blends both the historical and modern features of the people and culture of the Eastern Cape. The route is watched over by a metal cut-out of Nelson Mandela, and it pays tribute to Madiba's 67 years of service to South Africans. The walk features 67 public art pieces created by 67 different Eastern Cape artists. Visual arts, urban design, and heritage treasures are merged into an experience intended to unite all sectors of a formerly divided community. It demonstrates to the rest of the world what magic exists in the post-apartheid era.

The result is an incredible tourism route known as the Arts Journey, which includes exhibitions and showcases on Route 67 and at the refurbished Athenaeum gallery. The Route was opened on September 24, 2011, South Africa’s National Heritage Day, and has launched a tourist hub that focuses on art, culture and heritage. Route 67 is a unique tourism product for Nelson Mandela Bay, a job creation project for the artists, and an educational tool for both local and international visitors to the city.

With guidance from the Nelson Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) developed the walk, which highlights the tale of Port Elizabeth's rich legacy, both in colonial and Nelson Mandela's history. The Voting Line sculpture by Anthony Harris and Konrad Geel at the Donkin Reserve is a life-size, laser-cut steel figure that represents all the villages that participated in the peaceful vote for democracy in April 1994.
